A simultaneous EEG and high temporal resolution fMRI study of trial-by-trial fluctuations in visual evoked potentials

چکیده
Introduction Simultaneous electroencephalography and functional MRI (EEG-fMRI) take advantage of the high temporal resolution of EEG to detect neuronal events of interest, while fMRI can localize, with a high spatial resolution, the hemodynamic response function (HRF) associated with these events. However, the poor temporal resolution of standard fMRI experiments, of the order of seconds, prevents an accurate estimation of the HRF shape at the single-trial level. While the HRF is known to be temporally sluggish, a high temporal resolution may still detect subtle spatial variations related to distinct events visible on EEG. Recently, the development of MR-encephalography (MREG) has allowed whole-brain fMRI with a high temporal resolution of the order of 100 ms [1-3]. This study uses this new technique to investigate trial-bytrial fluctuations related to visual evoked potentials (VEP) recorded with simultaneous EEG-fMRI.

Single-trial analysis of oddball event-related potentials in simultaneous EEG-fMRI.
There has recently been a growing interest in the use of simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional MRI (fMRI) for evoked activity in cognitive paradigms, thereby obtaining functional datasets with both high spatial and temporal resolution. The simultaneous recording permits obtaining event-related potentials (ERPs) and MR images in the same environment, conditions of stimulation,...

OBJECTIVE Simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) combines advantages of both methods, namely high temporal resolution of EEG and high spatial resolution of fMRI. However, EEG quality is limited due to severe artifacts caused by fMRI scanners. APPROACH To improve EEG data quality substantially, we introduce methods that use a reusable referen...
متن کاملContact heat evoked potentials using simultaneous EEG and fMRI and their correlation with evoked pain
BACKGROUND The Contact Heat Evoked Potential Stimulator (CHEPS) utilises rapidly delivered heat pulses with adjustable peak temperatures to stimulate the differential warm/heat thresholds of receptors expressed by Adelta and C fibres. The resulting evoked potentials can be recorded and measured, providing a useful clinical tool for the study of thermal and nociceptive pathways. Concurrent recor...
متن کاملData-driven analysis of simultaneous EEG/fMRI using an ICA approach
Due to its millisecond-scale temporal resolution, EEG allows to assess neural correlates with precisely defined temporal relationship relative to a given event. This knowledge is generally lacking in data from functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) which has a temporal resolution on the scale of seconds so that possibilities to combine the two modalities are sought. Previous applications ...
متن کاملLaser-evoked potential P2 single-trial amplitudes covary with the fMRI BOLD response in the medial pain system and interconnected subcortical structures
Pain is a complex experience with sensory, emotional and cognitive aspects. The cortical representation of pain - the pain matrix - consists of a network of regions including the primary (S1) and secondary (S2) sensory cortex, insula, and anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). These structures interact with brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex and the amygdalae. Simultaneous EEG/fMRI (electroe...
